Many of us today find ourselves craving the less-is-more or zen lifestyle.

Whether it’s a rental or new purchase to downsize, condos, apartments and smaller homes are gaining in popularity. However, for some, these smaller-scale spaces may pose challenges.

Once you find your charming smaller space, PLAN before you move in. The right color, creative furniture layout and ways to store clutter —such as built-ins — make the most of your small space.

If building new, ask the builder for ways to upgrade your space with built-ins, where needed or desired. When renting, ask the landlord what is allowed as you work to create optimal function in your smaller space.

Embrace your small space and appreciate it for what it is. Use the following dos and don’ts to help you on your way to enjoying your simplified lifestyle.

DO decide what REALLY is needed for your everyday living and PLAN around it.

DO be creative with storage — for instance a drawer microwave will free up counter space.

DO choose appropriate scale furnishings — consider multi-functional pieces like a futon or a rolling bookcase to serve as a privacy barrier and for storage.

DO choose colors that expand versus closing in a small space.
