Combine the performing arts with the visual arts and the results can be stunning. Such is the case with the photography show currently on view in conjunction with the Bates Dance Festival.

Up through Aug. 12, the show features the work of Peaks Island photographer Arthur Fink. He spent several weeks last summer photographing dancers at the Bates Dance Festival (which has performances going on now through the middle of August). Fink’s provocative images include several of the acclaimed South African dancer Vincent Sekwati Mansoe.

“Just witnessing his class was an incredible spiritual experience,” says Fink.

Fink, who prefers to photograph the dancers as they fine-tune their craft (rather than just capture the finished performance), has work in many collections, including the Portland Museum of Art.

The show is on view at the Chase Hall Gallery at Bates College in Lewiston. It is open daily from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. FMI call 786-6381 or visit http://abacus.bates.edu/dancefest.
