Decorative and functional ceramic tile is making a bold statement in interior design trends this year. Industry sources tell me that today’s homeowners are steering far away from the tooth-white, colorless tiles of the ‘60s and moving into a entirely new dimension of design motifs, guided mostly by color — in this case, rich, sparkling color.

They point out that gleaming metallics, bronze finishes and golden tiles have the ability to make a dynamic statement in home design, adding a hint of opulence or fun to any design motif. A shining example sparking this year’s hot new trend: Gold ceramic tile.

Gold is not only a visual lifestyle indicator but has become a timeless trademark of quality and glamour, conferring an air of excellence upon your home’s interior. German high-end ceramic tile manufacturer, Steuler-Fliesen, has taken gold tiles to an entirely new level, making tile out of actual gold, based on a consumer-driven demand for new stylish and innovative tile options.

Paris-based designer Phillippe Starck and the YOO USA architectural firm actually built an entire room in New York City using Steuler-Fliesen’s gold tile mosaics on the walls and ceilings and continuing the tiles onto the floor with a slip resistant coating.

I’m not recommending that you rip up your entire bathroom and transform it into an architectural gold wonder from head to toe, but for just a touch of added shine, consider using gold tile sparingly throughout your house, as a kitchen backsplash, a border around your room or around the bathroom sink and mirror. Gold tile can also be used as an insert to selectively accent a more traditional floor design. However, choosing between thousands of ceramic tile designs can be tough, so pick a design that will make you feel like royalty for a day, every day.
