Want to own a black leather Georgio Armani handbag donated by actress Glenn Close? You can if you’re the high bidder at the Purses with Purpose auction Thursday, May 31 at the Sable Oaks Marriott in South Portland. For the second year in a row, the Ronald McDonald House in Portland hosts this fun fund-raising event, which supports the home’s mission of providing housing to families when a critically-ill child is being treated at a local hospital.

“It was a huge hit last year so we decided to do it again,” says Shanon Heckethorn, community manager at the Ronald McDonald House. “This is a really neat opportunity for people to see one-of-a-kind handbags and see new trends. There are also vintage bags. Every one is unique.”

During the luncheon event, you can bid on more than 160 items including handbags, home accessories, rain gear, sunglasses and jewelry. A silent auction, featuring the bulk of the purses, runs from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Then Maine’s Funniest Mom Karen Morgan takes the stage to rev up the bidding in the live auction.

The purses to be auctioned include bags donated by Angela Adams, Anna Street, BCBG, Cole Haan, Coach, Accessories Unlimited, Timberland, Talbot’s, Vegan Handbags by Matt and Natt, Old Bagzz, English Retreads, Ella Bags, NOVICA and Poise CC. In addition to Close, other celebrities who’ve donated bags to the auction include actress Patricia Heaton from “Everybody Loves Raymond,” WCSH-6 anchor Shannon Moss, WGME anchor Kiley Bennett, Senator Olympia Snowe and Senator Susan Collins.

Other items headed for the live auction block include an all-expenses paid trip to New York City to see “Grease” on Broadway, 4 VIP tickets to a taping of the “Dr. Phil Show,” an elegant brunch for 6 catered in your home, a trip to Tanglewood in Lenox, Mass. donated by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, 2 Adirondack chairs donated by Finest, Hearth and Home, a rug donated by Company C and a fabulous spa day for 5 at Fabu.

“Tickets are selling fast,” Heckethorn says, “250 people have signed up so far.”
