On Aug. 17, the affection for that swimming and boating and kayaking hole will take centerstage for Love Your Lakes Day and its coinciding Antique Boat Parade. There will be dryland exhibits for kids and adults hosted by the Lake Sunapee Protective Association and the parade will entertain onlookers as it cruises in and around Sunapee Harbor.
The lake’s the perfect place for sailing, but if you don’t own a boat you can take a cruise on the MV Mt. Sunapee II (www.sunapeecruises.com) to check out the sites that include Loon Island, Fishers Bay, Mount Kearsage and three working lighthouses. The MV Kearsage, a replica of a steamboat from days gone by, offers dinner cruises.
Relax and enjoy the sun and the water at Sunapee State Park Beach on Rte. 103 (www.nhparks.state.nh.us) or rent canoes or kayaks to paddle around the harbor.
Another coming event to take advantage of is the 35th Annual Apple Pie Craft Fair set for Aug. 23 on the town common. There will be delish homemade apple pies that bakers from all over town will create and sell to benefit the Library Arts Center. There will be an apple pie contest and the winning pie will be sold by the slice. Check out the 90 booths of crafts, the firemen’s BBQ and music.
For other entertainment, check out the schedule at the New London Barn Playhouse from June through Labor Day. August shows include “My Fair Lady,” “Fiddler on the Roof” and “The Unexpected Guest.”
If food’s on your get-away menu, check out the Anchorage Restaurant at Sunapee Harbor or the Double Diamond Cafe on Rte. 103. Nearby, New London has many more dining choices, including the Millstone Restaurant ($7-$22) on Newport Road or the Inn at Pleasant Lake on Pleasant Road, where you can enjoy a five course prix fixe dinner ($55). You can also stay at this country inn that was built in 1790 as a working farm ($125-$é).
