There are good options, even in bad stores

If you’re hitting the road for vacation this summer and find yourself hit by the hungries with no healthy place to turn, you can find options that won’t totally block your arteries at some convenience stores.

You best bet is a container of low-fat yogurt. This choice will be filled with calcium and protein and will help you feel full. If you can’t find yogurt, try a package of low-fat string cheese or pair a small carton of skim milk with a piece of fruit.

If those choices don’t sound appealing, make your own trail mix. Grab a mini cereal box (like Cheerios or Chex), add raisins, mini pretzels and nuts. Get a paper bag to mix it in and you’ll have a much more healthy snack that the pre-mixed trail mix, which usually is high in sugar and fat.

Whatever you choose, make sure you stay away from doughnuts and other pastries which will give you a quick sugar boost but then leave you craving more.
