These how and why (“pourquoi”) stories by acclaimed storyteller Michael Parent offer “answers” to questions about favorite (and not-so-favorite) bugs. Crazy for Creepy-Crawlies | Tuesday Aug. 5, 2:30 pm
If you’d like to be a bug scientist when you grow up, here’s your chance to meet someone who already is. Guest instructor Joe Staples is an entomologist and professor at USM. His presentation will include a wide range of insect info (like life cycles and feeding), as well as sharing bug specimens and collections. Weather permitting, you’ll end with a visit to the library backyard to see what kind of insect inhabitants you can identify. This event is suitable for kids ages 5 & up.
Spin Like a Spider, Buzz Like a Bee | Wednesday Aug. 6, 2:30 pm
If you like music and love to move & dance (no formal training required), don’t miss this activity session filled with fun and creativity. Under the guidance of community arts educator Merril Abramson, participants will explore improvised movement routines — maybe a jazzy jitterbug, a beetle belly dance, some cicada swingin’ or a cricket country line dance. However it turns out, it’ll be a buggy dance dance revolution that leaves everyone breathless with laughter. This event is for kids ages 5 & up.
Dog Days of Summer Storytime & Watermelon Party | Tuesday Aug. 12, 1:30 pm
Join us for stories, songs & activities aimed at the 3-7-year-old crowd. Weather permitting, storytime and watermelon party will be on the library’s back lawn, so bring a blanket if it’s sunny.
Chess Mini-Tournament | Wednesday Aug. 13, 3-5 pm
Whether you’re still pretty much of a beginner or are ready to face more experienced players, here’s a fun and low-stress chance to experience the format and procedures of a chess tournament. Warren ChessKids coach Philip Lowell will be on hand to offer some pointers, arrange matches at similar skill levels, and as general overseer — let the competition begin.
Brilliant & Beautiful Butterflies | Wednesday Aug. 20, 10:30 am
Join in celebrating all things butterfly with guest presenter Pam Leo. Author of “Connection Parenting,” Leo will share her ideas for cultivating a stronger parent-child connection through early literacy activities, focusing on the wonder and marvel that can be shared through butterfly exploration. This session is for parents of children ages 1-5 and will include interactive experiences that can be carried over at home.
