The rules were simple: take a plain mask and adorn it with beads. The results, however, are anything but ordinary. See for yourself this Friday, June 27 from 5-8 pm when the Beadin’ Path in Freeport hosts an opening reception for “Behind the Mask.”

The show features the work of more than 40 artists, who created masks using varying techniques such as seed bead weaving, bead stitching, bead embroidery, sculpture, mixed media and clay.

Works in the show have come from countries including Portugal, Australia, Kenya, Canada and Scotland. This is the second worldwide Bead Challenge issued by the store. The first took place last year and involved beaded dolls.
“The mask started out first as just something to reflect beauty, as many of my beaded art dolls do,” says artist, Aryd’ell Hotelling of North Carolina. “Then it took a slightly different direction, wanting to reflect and enhance understanding of how the face reveals (one’s) emotions, through bead(s).”

“Behind the Mask” is on view through July 27 at The Beadin’ Path, located at 15 Main St. in Freeport. FMI call 865-4785 or visit www.beadinpath.com.
