Still sneezing?

Try these tricks to keep allergies out of your home

You’d like to think the worst of the allergy season in Maine is over with — but don’t be fooled.

Pollen is still covering everything from BBQ grill covers to cars to deck furniture to the water in Sebago Lake. And the fact that your neighbor mows his lawn every five days like clockwork means your sneezing, stuffy head and itchy eyes are far from over.

Try some of these helpful tips so you’ll have some tissues left over when cold and flu season rolls around again.

1. Run your ceiling fans. They keep the air moving and don’t allow dust and dander to settle. Just be sure to clean the blades regularly or you’ll be shooting that accumulated dust around the room.

2. Choose wood or vinyl blinds over curtains. They don’t trap in dust the way fabric can.

3. If you have the option, choose wood floors instead of carpet — especially in the bedroom. Severe allergies can mean daily vacuuming if you have pets, but some vacs will just put the dust and dander right back into the air. Wood floors can be swept or damp-mopped.

4. Try an air purifier. They do their best to rid the air in the room from dust, pollen and smoke.

5. Turn on the AC, but make sure your filter’s clean. The cool air will remove some of the stuffiness from the house and your head but it’ll do little good if the air’s getting dirty on its way through the machine.
