While instant photo fans around the world mourn the demise of the Polaroid, SPACE GALLERY (538 Congress St.) is hosting what likely will be its last “Annual Polaroid Auction.” Which is why we begin our selected tour with a stop at this silent auction that offers a chance to snag snapshots by well-known local photographers at an affordable price. All the money raised supports this nonprofit gallery.

Of course there’s lots of great art to see on Congress Street, but one can’t-miss-spot is the new location of CYGNET GALLERY (568 Congress St.), where an invitational show featuring the work of nine artists who work in a variety of media is on view.

Next, head up to the PORTLAND MUSEUM OF ART (7 Congress Sq.), where you can check out “Contemporary Collaborations.” This show features prints by artists with ties to Maine and was put together by legendary curator Bruce Brown.

More big name art is in your future when you make your way across Congress to AUCOCISCO GALLERIES (613 Congress St.) to take in “Elemental Landscapes.” This group show features non-traditional nature views by well known artists, including Dozier Bell, Katherine Bradford, Alan Bray and Bernard Langlais.

Finally, finish the tour at the Congress Building (home of the defunct State Theater), where once again there’s lots to see, including artists GRAHAM WOOD and DREW WILEN (615 Congress St., Suite 509), who are showing a variety of recent work.
