Get that ‘Ah’ feeling

Tips for freshening your home well before spring arrives

Something magical happens when we get a mild day in mid-winter and we are able to open our windows (even if it’s just a crack) to let in the fresh air for an hour or two. Or, when we get to see the blacktop in our driveway for the first time in weeks. Or better yet, when we are able to hang the sheets on the clothesline in the winter’s fresh breeze.

You can create that “Ah” feeling anytime with some simple mid-winter practices.

• Wash some windows to experience the winter sunshine through clear glass (especially those that face south and west).

• Toss your curtains in the dryer on the air only cycle with a dryer sheet for a few minutes to get the dust out. When you hang them back up, try adding a tie back or swag the curtain over the pole for a different look.

• Clean out those candle votives and replace then with new candles. Simply place the votives in a shallow pan of hot water. In a few minutes the wax and old wicks will slide right out.

• Plump some pillows, or better yet, add some new ones.

• Buy some new music. And, actually listen to it instead of the television.

• Rearrange your children’s rooms. They will love rediscovering the contents and waking up in a different setting.

• Organize a closet or drawer. Purchase a labeler and clear storage boxes for easy identification of contents.

• Clean out the refrigerator. (Perhaps it’s time to let go of that Thanksgiving cranberry sauce!)

• Burn some incense or scented candles.

• Buy fresh flowers and place them on your bureau or night stand so when you awake in the morning you are greeted with beautiful color. It’s a great way to start the day!

Winter may not be over just yet, but perhaps we can trick ourselves into believing that spring is just around the corner.
