Triathlon’s coming to downtown Portland

Do something epic
2007-04-03
Race season is nearly upon us and when you’re making competition plans keep in mind that the Urban/Epic Triathlon and Festival will debut on Aug. 18 in downtown Portland.
The Epic combines a 1.5K swim, 40K bike race and 10K run. The swim begins from the decks of 2 Casco Bay Lines Ferries anchored at Fort Gorges. Swimmers will take the plunge from the boats and finish the water leg at East End Beach. Cyclists will ride an out-and-back course available only for the race — from downtown Portland, across Tukey’s Bridge and north up the coast. The run will be memorable as well, as athletes cover a lollipop of the Eastern Prom Trail and Back Cove Path.
There are 3 ways to register for the event, but don’t delay because the Epic will fill up fast. Online you can pay by credit card (there is an additional charge) at Active.com. Or, you can print a form at Active.com and mail it in with a check. You should receive a confirmation e-mail within a week. You can also visit Peak Performance Sports at 59 Middle Street in Portland and sign up with cash or check. The limit for the Epic is 600 athletes.
Fees are $110 for USAT members and $120 for non-members. Relay teams pay $– plus $10 for each non-USAT member. Entry includes a race T-shirt, loaded goodie bag, finisher’s award, post-race food, beverage and festival, a ticket onto the Casco Bay Lines Ferry and the chance to compete in Maine’s newest event.
