More than lunch

Yarmouth’s Clayton’s Café is the new sandwich standard

Clayton’s feels as much like an old country store as it does a restaurant and is one of the most welcoming places around. The hustle and bustle of the lunch hours at this Yarmouth establishment are no worry for the seasoned and effortlessly calm employees.

Clayton’s boasts a immense selection of packaged gourmet foods — both local and imported. With the penny candy selection situated perfectly in the eye line of children, parents are able to peruse the eclectic wine selection while their food is being prepared. It really is a one-stop-shop for everything gourmet.

The menu consists of deli sandwiches, veggie roll-ups, grilled sandwiches, salads of all sizes and textures and breakfast sandwiches (served until 10:30 am). Clayton’s interpretation of the classics include the black forest ham and brie sandwich with Honeycup sweet and spicy mustard, lettuce and tomato ($6.95) and the roast beef sandwich with cheddar-horseradish spread, Bermuda onion, lettuce and tomato. All sandwiches are served on thick slices of freshly baked Borealis sourdough bread (wheat bread or a roll-up can be substituted).

Clayton’s offers two soups daily (one vegetarian). Being the traditional girl that I am, I opted for the chicken noodle, expecting a traditional version. I was pleasantly surprised when I received a cup ($3.50) filled with broccoli, carrots, celery, chicken and, of course, noodles. The spices and herbs used added to the distinct flavor.

Along with my soup I ordered the fresh hummus or cheese roll-up ($5.25). Since I’m not a fan of either cheese or hummus I asked to substitute the sun-dried tomato pesto I had seen in the descriptions of other sandwiches. The roll-up was stuffed with lettuce, tomato, red peppers, onion, cucumbers, shredded carrots and shredded red cabbage, all tossed with the house balsamic vinaigrette. Choices of cheese for this roll-up include herbed chevre, feta, gouda, Swiss, cheddar, American or fresh mozzarella.

Mom ordered the Mediterranean chicken salad sandwich ($6.50). It was a toss-up for her between that and the Clayton’s famous chicken salad sandwich ($6.50) she’s grown fond of. For the sake of this review she agreed to try something new. Clayton’s chicken salad is the most popular item on the menu, with all-white diced chicken breast tossed with Danish bleu cheese, mayo and red grapes on a bed of lettuce. The Mediterranean grilled chicken salad sandwich comes with grilled chicken breast, sun-dried tomatoes, roasted red peppers, onion and parsley, tossed in balsamic vinaigrette and topped with lettuce and tomato.

There was no way I could pass up dessert, so Mom and I decided we would bring something home. The dessert case — which tempted me the moment I walked in the door — is loaded with chocolate creations, strudels, cakes, pies and cookies. We chose the tiramisu ($3). My mom believes it to be one of the best she’s ever had and I enjoyed every bite of the creamy, decadent treat.

The breakfast fare at Clayton’s consists of breakfast sandwiches on your choice of bread (grilled Borealis sourdough, jumbo Thomas’ English muffin or grilled wrap) spread with real butter and lemonaise (from $3.95 to $ 5.50).

With Clayton’s serving breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and plenty of snacks, I’m sure my next visit is not too far away.
