International artist speaks

Alfredo Jaar comes to Portland Dec. 4

"Infinite Cell," by Alfredo Jaar
A high-profile, internationally renowned artist, Alfredo Jaar comes to Portland Dec. 4 to deliver a lecture, sponsored by the Portland Museum of Art. Jaar is known for such controversial works as torching a temporary art gallery in a Swedish town to make a point about the lack of cultural spaces and pairing four months of “Newsweek” covers with the timeline of the Rwandan genocide to show how obsessed Americans (and our news organizations) are with pop culture in the face of disturbing current affairs.

His work operates between the public and private, making people aware of art, suffering and injustice. An artist, architect and filmmaker, Jaar creates works that strive to encourage public responsibility. A recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1985 and a MacArthur Fellowship in 2000, Jaar encourages us to participate more fully with our world.

The lecture takes place at USM’s Hannaford Lecture Hall at 88 Bedford St. in Portland. Doors open at 6 pm and admission is free. FMI 775-6”.
