This cozy cafe is located in Westbrook, sitting just before the Windham town line on Rte 302. Inside the purple building you’ll find a Jamaican paradise with Afrocentric art lining the walls, which are painted in Rastafarian red, yellow and green. Several diner-style booths fill the space to seat around 60 people.
The boyfriend and I visited late on a Tuesday morning. Let me say that leaving the office to devour breakfast with mimosa’s and bloody Mary’s at the Wake N’ Bakery has got to make my job just about the sweetest one in existence.
Looking over the very extensive menu, I couldn’t decide whether to have breakfast or lunch. I opted for the breakfast menu since Ms. Editor sent me on a brunch mission. And mimosas don’t quite accompany a cheeseburger wrap like they do the Greek omelette ($7.25) I ordered.
I really wanted to try the broccoli bacon onion tomato cheddar home fries ($6.95), but I chose the omelette because, well, I never order them. The Greek was filled with bacon, spinach, tomato, mushrooms and feta and came with marble rye toast and an added side of hash. Although I couldn’t finish my large portions, I was quite satisfied and plan to return for that glorious plate of potatoes I passed up.
The boyfriend ordered a steak burrito ($7.95) and several bloodies, which he said were so good they made up for the misleading name of the restaurant — he expected baked goods not a cafe with a backroom full of glass “sculptures.”
Yep, the Wake N’ Bakery has a lovely assortment of glass pipes for sale. You must be 18 or over and accompanied by an employee to view them, so I just peeked in so as not to intrude on the one server.
We stayed longer than most restaurant visits — the atmosphere was so very relaxing, plus they offer a “Bottomless Cup of Coffee ($1.60)” that you fill yourself from the coffee bar with several flavors from New England Coffee Company.
There’s nothing gourmet about this cafe, but the food hits the spot none the less. I saw nothing on the menu I’d refuse, however, I was hoping to see more “smoked” items! Ha!
Smoked or not, I’ll be back because the Wake N’ Bakery provides a blissful brunch you’ll soon find addictive.
