Chrome, black and white tiles and red vinyl booths give the Rock n' Roll diner its vintage appeal.
Chrome gleams in the sunlight on the outside of the new Rock ‘n Roll Diner in Scarborough. Inside, black and white tiles, red vinyl booths and more chrome behind the counter give this place an authentic, fifties feel. The food too takes its cue from years-gone-by, with a few updates for modern palates.

The diner opened on Rte 1 near Dunstan Corner a month ago and since then has been packed with both locals and tourists. With its swivel seats at the lunch counter and a jukebox in the corner, it’s the perfect spot to order up a root beer float and share it with your sweetie. (No poodle skirts required.)

The restaurant is owned by Jeanne and Mike Glaude. Veterans of the campground world (they used to own Silver Springs Campground in Saco), this is their first foodservice venture.

“We had another project in mind (for the land),” Jeanne says. “But our friends mentioned that a diner would stand out.”

After a little more convincing from their friends (who own the Blast From The Past Diner in Waterboro), the Glaudes decided to take a chance and build a diner. It’s a risk that seems to be paying off.

Jeanne says the diner is busy all day, with a short lull in the afternoon. Those who come for dinner often have to put their names on the list and wait for a table at the 110 seat restaurant.

The menu plays off the rock ‘n roll theme, with items like hippy hippy shakes ($3.69), wooly bully pizza burgers ($6.79), magic meatball subs ($7.09) and the chick-a-boom chicken caesar wraps ($6.29).

“A lot of stuff is homemade right here,” Jeanne says, “such as the pizzas and the shepherd’s pie, which is a big seller.”

She adds that “the liver and onions seems to be really moving. The onion rings too.”

The breakfast menu includes the usual suspects, like omelets ($6.29-$7.69), egg sandwiches ($4.29), corned beef hash ($5.69) and blueberry pancakes ($5.29).

“People want breakfast all day, but we don’t have the grill space,” Jeanne says. “Maybe someday.”

So if you’re hankering for some grilled grub, put on your dancing shoes and head down to Scarborough. The jukebox tunes are sure to set your toes to tappin’.
